Trip in Hong Kong: North District Hidden Gems – Food & Sightseeing Guide to Fanling & Sheung Shui

You got a car and need a set of tyre replacements. Then you find me online, and realize that Fanling is quite far away from your house located in Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. You hesitate even if the tyre price is much cheaper than your nearby stores.

If you are one of them, I am here to convince you to come over not just for my business services but also for food and sightseeing. Some of my customers stay as far away as Tai O, Tung Chung, Kowloon and TKO. Though most of them come over believing in my service. And now, they got more reasons to come over.

I will create another post for Tai Po area.

Fanling For Food

1. Delux Restaurant

Started in the year 1981. It was once a very popular steak restaurant for British soldiers in the past when HK was still a colony (there was a barricade at Sha Tau Kok Road).

Over the years, the ownership has changed but the decoration inside still remains as it once was. Upon entering, you will feel like entering a different time zone.

2. Glasses Man Rice Roll

Steamed Rice Rolls, SiuMai, (curry) fishball etc.

These are popular traditional snacks for breakfast and tea in the past. Inflation over the years no longer see any low price snacks. However, this is one of them who still keep the selling price at a low price.

“The steamed rice rolls are cut in a little tricky way” said by my friend who was a chef some years ago. He said that people either pour all the oil onto the steamed rice rolls or they do not put at all and taste dry when eating them.

He stayed in Yuen Long. Whenever he come over to my store, he will patronize this store for his childhood snacks.

It’s good for drivers who want to replace their tyres during lunch time and get a quick lunch.

3. Kwan Kee Beef Balls & Pork Knuckles

Over 40 years in history. One of the most famous local restaurant in Fanling. Its name often appears in various mass media and social media because of the food it sells.

It’s so famous that some of the food like beef balls are sold off very quickly. I once went over at around 12 something for lunch and it’s already out of stock.

Click here to direct you for the nearby parking space.

4. Jazz Ramen

Founded by a Japanese in the year 1999. It does not have a fixed opening hours, and the store is small. Very rare to see it open during lunch time. Often approaching in the evening hours but sometimes it’s still closed even in Saturday and Sunday.

Click here to direct you for the nearby parking space.

5. CoHee

A cafe located at Former Fanling Magistracy. Its once so popular that you need to reserve your seat one day earlier. Sometimes you still need to line up for the seats. After your visit to former Fanling Magistracy, you can try out the coffee there.

I wondered if the founder is a Japanese naming the cafe “コーヒー” (same pronunciation as the cafe name)

You can park your vehicle at North District Government Offices Car Park or Cheung Wah Car Park B which is further away.

Fanling For Sightseeing

It’s not just about eating. Sightseeing and hiking are part of the activities you can do in N.T.

Luen Wo Market

A Grade III historical building (build in 1951) which has renovated and opened up for people to visit (for free).

More images before renovation can be found here.

Saint Joseph’s Church

A Grade III historical building built in 1953. It’s a Catholic church built in a village area for evangelize.

Luen Wo Market and Saint Joseph’s Church is a street away. You can visit both places after breakfast / lunch.

Lau Shui Heung Reservoir

Best view during autumn to winter season for viewing red leaves

Former Fanling Magistracy

A Grade III historical building, constructed in 1960. The first Magistracy in N.T. It’s kept as historic heritage after moving to the new one just nearby.

The building is now renovated and it’s free to visit.

Click the link here to find out how it looks like before renovation.

I am unsure if they provide parking slots. But you can choose to park your vehicle at North District Government Offices Car Park or Cheung Wah Car Park.

If you are planning to have lunch/dinner at Fanling Town Centre or Fanling Centre, you can park at Fanling Town Centre Car Park (strongly suggested) or Cheung Wah Car Park.
Only park at Fanling Centre Car Park on G/F. Do not go up on 1/F if you are driving a 7 passenger, SUV or MPV (as well as not for long sedans). Going up is easy but getting down is IMPOSSIBLE for SUV/MPV. If you really went up on the 1/F for parking, I advise you to ask for parking management officer to help by allowing you to get down the G/F using the same route as you go up.

Fung Ying Seen Koon

Founded in 1929, this Taoist temple is one of the oldest building found in the area.

To my surprise, one of my Singapore friends is actually a student of a master in Fung Ying Seen Kook.

Luk Keng Hiking

A very easy route along the seaside. It’s an escape from crowded people and tall buildings. There is a very small car park nearby.

Luk Keng to Tai Mei Tuk (Tai Po)

From Luk Keng, you can drive to Tai Po Tai Mei Tuk via Bridge’s Pool Road for Tai Po sightseeing. I will create another post for this.

The road are two ways. Do not speed up or drive over the other lane if the road is turning. Many drive fast on this road and got into accident while they are steering.

Fanling Luen Wo Market Car Park

1. Commune Modern (囍逸停車場)

2. Regentville Shopping Centre Car Park

3. Open area car park

Fanling Centre And Nearby Car Park

1. Fanling Town Centre Car Park

2. Cheung Wah Car Park

Sheung Shui Places For Food

1. The Better ‘Ole Bar & Restaurant

Founded in 1947 in Fanling, the restaurant had shifted a few places and eventually left with Sheung Shui that still holds the Britian style of decoration. There is a bar on the left and restaurant on the right.

Although it has branched out back to Fanling, the Sheung Shui is still the preferred one due to its old style of decoration.

2. Tofu Pudding

HK$15/person for tofu pudding buffet. Limited to one or two tastes only. Only hot tofu pudding is available. Other snacks such as siu mai are also available.

Sheung Shui Sightseeing

Near to China boundary, Sheung Shui is more like an area for nature reserve. Places like Long Valley Nature Park, River Indus, and Hiking
