The release of Pilot Sport 5 (PS5) as the successor of Pilot Sport 4 (PS4) does not stop PS4 from production. PS4 is still here for run flat model, as an original equipped tyre T0, T1 marking for Tesla with acoustic cotton, and some other vehicles models as original equipped such as MO, N0 etc.
It’s around 4 years since the release of Pilot Sport 5, should you still opt for Pilot Sport 4 as your original equipped or go for the successor?

Pilot Sport 5 has a slightly higher treadwear compared to Pilot Sport 4 with a grade down on the traction. In reality, customers also feedback that Pilot Sport 5 mileage has indeed increased as compared to the predecessor.
Although Pilot Sport 5 traction has downgraded, customers still find it good in wet performance.

Although both models offer more or less the same rank in EU tyre label, Pilot Sport 5 in general are more consistent in the ranking for all the sizes available, achieving almost all “A” rank in wet grip, however, in exchange for a noisier external rolling noise.

The thai eco tyre label further proves that Pilot Sport 5 gets a bit noiser as compared to Pilot Sport 4. Mainly achieving rank “C” for fuel efficiency for most sizes offered by Pilot Sport 5 gives vehicle owners advantage of saving fuels while still have a high grip in the performance.
It’s interesting to find out that some of the Pilot Sport 4 sizes actually have better wet grip than Pilot Sport 5.

Conclusion
The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 is not stopping any time soon, especially some of the sizes are still original equipped in some vehicle brands such as Tesla Model 3. Some sizes are not in production for Pilot Sport 5 neither.


If your tyre size have a choice between Pilot Sport 4 (PS4) and Pilot Sport 5 (PS5) such as 235/45 R18 Tesla Model 3, choose PS5 for a longer mileage, better fuel (or electric) efficiency (for some sizes) or choose PS4 for a very high wet grip and lower noise.
