Ever since Tesla Model Y vehicle ownership is increasing, the top brand tyres pricing related to Tesla Model Y are also increasing. Afterall, the demand has increased more than twofold. Most vehicle owners purchase vehicles based on emotion, vehicle specifications, but almost very few people thought of tyre cost in the long run.
Here, I made one for those who are driving Tesla Model Y with 255/40 R20 to consider the following tyres that are not as expensive and yet perform well with the vehicle base on the following requirements that I will look at:
- Perform well both in dry and wet at high speed.
- Decent wear off. At least the price must match the mileage the tyre can use under proper maintenance.
- Price must be much cheaper than top brands.
1. Falken FK520L
First place in all the brands available. Highest record mileage by a Tesla driver ~70,000km. I told him that it could be driven more than that with proper maintenance.
This model is my best seller in this size. The price range for this model range from HK$1500 – HK$1700/tyre depending on any special promotional discount available.
A China brand EV tyre with less performance cost around HK$1100 – HK$1300/tyre, and top brands like Michelin, Bridgestone cost more than HK$2300/tyre. Therefore, this FK520L overall got the first recommended based on price, wearoff, and its very good Japan quality performance.
Referencing the FK520 counterpart, with EU tyre label wet grip as A and standard noise level 70dB. It is undoubted that FK520L is a strong choice for model Y drivers.
Installing FK520L disadvantage is the driving range will be lower because of its strong grip. Something that actually worths to sacrifice if you are driving at a very high speed.

2. Dunlop Sport Maxx 060+
Rarely seen this size in the Hong Kong market. Otherwise this got to be best seller instead. Manufactured by the same factory as Falken. The 060+ original pricing is lower than FK520L. Both tyres offered the same ultra high performance with great grip in both dry and wet.
A Thai Tyre Label data shows Fuel Efficiency as C, Wet Grip as A, and Noise Level as 72dB for one of the sizes (not 255/40 R20).
Tyre Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JATMA) Japan Tyre Label shows
| JATMA Tyre Label | Sport Maxx 060+ |
| Rolling Resistance | A – B |
| Wet Grip | a |
Sport Maxx 060+ over FK520L solely due to its selling price. Since both tyres offering same performance, the lower price is the preferred option.

3. Kumho PS72S Ecsta Sport S
An ultra-high performance tyre that cost HK$1250 – HK$1350/tyre. Just slightly more expensive than any China brand tyre available but with much higher performance in dry and wet.
Ecsta Sport S is the higher version of PS72. Its exceptional grip offers security in speeding. However, its treadwear is the downside especially compare with Falken and Dunlop. Its noise level is also higher than FK520L and Sport Maxx 060+.
If pricing is the first priority, Kumho Ecsta Sport S is preferred.
