How well do you know about automotive battery? Only a handful of technicians in HK can tell you the structure, current and chemical involved in a battery. More expensive, well-known brand doesn’t mean last longer.

This time, let me recommend the top 4 car batteries that are truly value worth to install.

1. Solite

Manufactured by Hyundai Sungwoo group in South Korea. This battery offers a good performance with cheaper price for normal private vehicle driving.

In the past years, I have installed this brand to multiple vehicle brands including Saonng, Volkswagen, Peugeot, Audi. Private vehicle drivers who are willing to get inspected every 6 to 9 moths, their batteries can last for at least 2 years. The longest one is 3 and a half years and still using (and still maintained and inspected by me every now and then.)

A 70Ah DIN EFB battery for HK$900 that last for 3.5 years (and maybe more), it is definitely the most value worth brand in the market.

2. Acdelco

An American brand owned by General Motors, is one of the famous brands sold in the U.S. market. Though Asia market may not be as well known especially in Hong Kong due to lack of marketing.

This brand is slightly more expensive than Solite but better performance, especially in Diesel vehicle such as Ssangyong

With 6 years of experiment for the same vehicle using Solite and Acdelco, the Acdelco condition is better than Solite after one year usage for a normal start up battery.

In another case, a EFB Acdelco installed in Mazada 6 is still in place after 3.5 years. Just a month ago, the customer came for inspection, and analysis showed that the battery should last another year if everything goes the same for the vehicle.

3. Furukawa Battery, FB

A Japanese company founded in 1950 and usually equipped as Original Equipment Battery in Japanese vehicle. The (non-maintenance free) 26L FB is very famous among Taxi drivers in HK.

To those who do not believe my experiment for the top two recommendations, and only trust in Japanese made battery, this one is definitely the choice for your requirement.

E.g. Normal start up battery 24L FB price is HK$750, considering a low price compared to other Japanese made battery.

However, this brand does not offer EFB and AGM battery in Hong Kong market for the time being.

4. Bosch

A German brand that I did not sell before. Judging from the usage of drivers who had previously installed this brand, it should last quite well with proper maintenance. This brand is still selling in HK market. I am unsure about the price and manufacturing place but possibly people are opting for the other brand – Varta, if it is selling the same price for the same manufacturing place.

5. Varta

A very famous brand even throughout the world. It is manufactured by Clario. A U.S. based company, that eats up the majority of the lead acid battery market share in the world. The price for made in EU maybe expensive, but those made in Korea are lower even for JIS and DIN standard. Though, the price is still higher than Solite.

Made in China, AGM battery has started selling in HK market. The price for this should be lower than those made in EU. Its packaging is also different from those made in EU. In case you got deceived by the technician simply judging from looking at the brand, you should ask about the manufacturing place.

Varta is put at the bottom of the recommendation due to the high selling price, especially DIN standard, as compared to other brands. If you do not trust the top 4 brands and prefer to fork out more expenses, this should be the one you are looking for.

Same vehicle model is not the same, same car batteries are not the same.

The same vehicle can be driven and used differently by different owners. Therefore, I recommend that each of my customers bring their car back for inspection every 6 to 9 months. This not only helps me better understand each owner’s driving habits and how the vehicle is being used, but also allows me to detect minor issues early and prevent them from becoming major problems.

Just a note that I will not inspect non-customers vehicle. It takes more than just checking voltage of the battery to find out the battery conditions. A bad battery may also relate to vehicle issues. In a way, you are asking for a free check up for your vehicle.
